Graduation Requirements

Class of 2018 to Class of 2020:

Students will be required to earn 22 credits. Please visit the Washington State Board of Education website for more information about graduation requirements.

Class of 2021 and beyond:

Students will be required to earn 24 high school credits in order to graduate.[1] This is a change from the 22 credits that is currently required through the class of 2020. Part of this change includes the requirement that students take three (3) credits of science instead of the two (2) credits now required. A graphic that shows all of the requirements that make up the 24 credits appears below.

It is important that students understand this requirement and what it means for the learning pathway ahead of them. High school students take six (6) classes a year, so over four years, students have 24 credit opportunities. It is important that students and their families select their courses carefully and that students strive to pass all of their courses so that they are able to graduate on time.

One opportunity for earning high school credit is through world language proficiency testing.
[2] Students who are proficient in a language other than English have the opportunity to earn up to four high school credits by demonstrating their proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in that language. Students need to show their skills in all four categories in order to receive credit. This test is available for students in grades 7-12 and the first test is free for students currently registered in the Edmonds School District. For more information, please visit the “World Language Proficiency Credits” website.

It is important that all students and their families select their courses carefully and that students strive to pass all of their courses so that they are able to graduate on time and be prepared for their personal post-high school goals. Pathways through high school will be shaped by High School and Beyond Plans which includes required classes as well as courses chosen in order to explore interests and prepare for specific goals. As with all high school planning, it will be important to share and review plans annually with school counselor.

Note: WA State’s 24 credit requirement does not apply to full International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma candidates at Edmonds-Woodway High School (EWHS) as they have their own, unique, graduation requirements. Please contact the IB Coordinator, David Quinn, for your graduation requirements.

World language proficiency testing is not recommended for full IB students, as they must complete world language courses as a part of their IB diploma course series.  Please contact the IB Coordinator for more details.

Certificate of Academic Achievement Options: Alternative Ways to Meet Standard

CAA Options are alternative ways for students to meet their State Testing Graduation Requirements. CAA Options are available to:
  • Students who have taken and not met standard on one or more state tests.
  • Students who have transferred from an out-of-state school, home school, or private school in 11th or 12th grade and who have had a waiver submitted to OSPI by their current school.
  • English Language Learners who were exempt in their 10th grade year.
For more information about CAA Options, please see Graduation Alternatives: CAA Options.
If you would like to participate in a CAA Option, please make an appointment with your school counselor.

Appeals and Requests to View State Tests

Scores may be appealed on any high school assessment that is required for graduation. The appeal allows guardians to challenge the technical aspects of a score: such as errors on open-ended items, incorrect score calculations, mistakes affecting erasures, and lightly marked bubbles on multiple choice items.
The appeal does not take into account student situations and will use the same rubric to rescore student work.
For more information about how to appeal a score or how to view your student's state test, please see the General Information section of the Parent Pages of the State Testing Portal.

State and District Graduation Requirements

Please keep in mind that in addition to state graduation requirements, students must meet both Washington State and Edmonds School District graduation requirements. To find out if your child is on track to earn a diploma, please contact their school counselor.

Non-Traditional Paths to Graduation

Not all students meet their graduation requirements within four years. There are many options open for students who wish to continue to pursue a diploma after their fourth year. For more information about this, please read Options for Students Not Graduating After Four Years of High School.
