Healthy Youth Surveys

HYS 2016
Healthy Youth Survey

The Healthy Youth Survey is a statewide, collaborative effort of OSPI, the Department of Health, the Department of Social and Health Service's Division of Behavioral and Health and Recovery, Family Policy Council, Department of Commerce, and Liquor Control Board.

The survey measures health risk behaviors that contribute to morbidity, mortality, and social problems among youth in Washington State.

The survey results are an important source of needs-assessment data for school districts, community-based organizations, local health and human services agencies, and state agencies. The results are used to monitor the health status of adolescents and track progress on state and federal education and health-related goals.

The Healthy Youth Survey is given to students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 across Washington State every other year. Participation in the survey is voluntary and the students' answers are anonymous. Students are permitted to skip questions and may stop taking the test at any point. If you do not want your student to participate in the survey, you may excuse them by calling your school office. Students can excuse themselves by telling their teacher that they do not want to take the survey. There is no penalty for not taking the survey, and your student's grades will not be affected.

To help students grow up in healthy surroundings, we need to know more about the strengths and challenges in our communities and its programs for young people.
