February 11, 2015
I want to share some news and information with you regarding the timeline for the construction of our new Lynndale Elementary. During the Feb. 10 Edmonds School District Board meeting, the Board of Directors voted unanimously to accelerate the timeline. The anticipated move-in date to our new school is now January 2017. In order for that to happen, we will relocate over this summer to the former Woodway Elementary and intend to have the main office open and operating August 1, 2015.
Some of you may be aware that changing the move-in date to the former Woodway Elementary location to this summer is resulting in the current tenants of that facility to have to relocate. I want to emphasize that the Board of Directors found it very difficult to ask the tenants to leave one year earlier. However, there are important reasons why the timeline is being accelerated:
· - Construction costs across the Puget Sound Region are expected to increase by as much as 6 percent in the next year. This is due to the number of construction projects, particularly within school districts. This demand increases costs.
· - BN Builders, who were awarded the contract to rebuild our school can save $600,000 of taxpayer funds by starting the project this year before the prices increase.
· - The project is not over budget. This savings will result in some design and program features for our school being completed that otherwise would have to be eliminated.
· - The District has an obligation to use the taxpayer funds for the intended purpose of providing our school community its new building.
I hope you all share in the excitement of learning our school community is receiving its long-awaited new school in two years. This is not only thanks to the supermajority of voters who approved the 2014 Capital Construction Bond, but the dedicated District staff who found a way to save money and provide us with our facility sooner.
I know there are many questions about transportation and other things associated with our move this summer. I will be providing that information to you in the coming weeks and months as the plans and details are developed.
